Photographing jewelry with natural light

Photographing with natural light is not something that comes easily to me. There seems to be too narrow a window of opportunity for me, and since I have SO much to photograph for my new web site (read that to be -- every. single. piece.) it's also a daunting task.

But today I got a bit done, and wanted to share the results. I'm getting there. It's just a slow process. I'm going a little cross-eyed uploading things to the new (and still un-launched) web site, but I'm hurrying as fast as I can with a child moping around saying he wants to DOOOOOOO something yet has absolutely NO idea what he wants to DO.

Lori Anderson designs jewelry for Lori Anderson Designs and also writes for the blog Pretty Things. She lives in Maryland.

  1. fully understand about trying to catch the natural light. i don't want to invest in a light box so i take my photo's outside also. You are right it is a timing issue :)

Your photo's look fantastic! You obviously found the right place, and right time of day to photograph. Great job.

  2. These are really nice photos Lori. I have been trying to take my pictures in the morning by a north facing window before 10 am. I have been getting some kind of tint probably from the reflection on the outside of the window of my green lawn. Sometimes I can eliminate it with Elements. Did you take all of these outdoors, no windows?

  4. The mermaid one was the only on that I took beside a window -- the rest were outside, after the sun had gone just over the roof of the house.

  7. Whether natural light or not, I must say photographiing jewellery is challenging and there's always something new to learn. Especially when people surf the net and decide within 2 seconds whether they wanna stay on the blog/site and look a bit more...It has to be catchy, and that's the hard bit. So well done on these!

  8. beautiful - i like outside at 5pm to the nw side of my house... oooor, early in the a.m. with shadows... depends upon how i am feeling and what kind of colors i need to emphasize... i too get a bit overwhelmed by the photoediting... it seems that after all of the creative energy that goes into MAKING something, the other steps (on certain days) can be daunting... best luck with the website...

And my mother was so lucky. I was always entertaining myself with a good book.

  11. The pictures look great! I really like the earring picture.

Photography of my jewelry is tricky for me. Getting the right light is difficult sometimes. Yours have just the right mixture of light and dark.
